Industrial Dust Control for Mobile Construction Applications
In mobile dust collection applications, cyclones need to maximize the use of available space without weighing machinery down. On construction vehicles, any industrial dust control equipment–like cyclone dust collectors– must be short enough to safely clear possible road obstructions like bridges, tunnels, and overhead utilities. The ideal cyclone (or other dust collection equipment) in these kinds of applications is one that’s able to remain in place during transport without needing to be repositioned during travel.
Mobile construction machinery for mining, asphalt work, field processing, feed delivery, or other bulk material handling applications has to operate within an application specific set of height, weight, and space constraints — something that can be challenging for the long, tall, and vertical build of a traditional cyclone.
Horizontal cyclones, however, are typically compact enough to fit on semi-trucks, trailers, trains, and ships without needing to be repositioned for transport from jobsite to jobsite. Their orientation allows them to stay in the operating position and clear bridges, tunnels, and other possible obstructions on the road. Although traditional cyclone options will always have their place in dust collection, horizontal collectors can be especially useful for mobile equipment where space is limited and operators need a reliable, low-maintenance option.
How do cyclone dust collectors operate?
Cyclones work by utilizing centrifugal force and mechanical separation to remove dust from dirty airstreams. Dust-laden air is routed from work areas into the cyclone’s spiral inlet. This air becomes subject to the cyclone’s centrifugal forces, which rotate rapidly to throw particulate outward toward the walls of the cyclone.
Aerodyne’s GPC, or ground plate cyclone, has a unique ground plate that forces fine particulate not immediately thrown outward to be deflected into the hopper. Simultaneously, that ground plate shields collected particulate from re-entraining during vortex reversal. This creates a barrier between the cyclone’s separation chamber and collection hopper, enabling a more compact cyclone to operate at high efficiencies — even when installed horizontally on a construction vehicle or other tight space.
In mobile applications, this compact design can be especially valuable. A horizontal GPC cyclone removes particulate from the airstream without the height or space requirements associated with more traditional industrial dust control equipment designs. That means the unit can be integrated into tight spaces while still supporting dust control, product recovery, and downstream equipment protection.
Aerodyne Environmental specializes in compact cyclone dust collection technology designed for applications with tough dust and/or unique collection/separation requirements. Because cyclones rely on mechanical separation rather than filter medias, they can also help reduce maintenance compared to fabric filter systems in demanding mobile environments. Our engineering team has provided cyclone dust collectors to a number of mobile applications—not all horizontally configured either!
Mobile pyrolysis application (horizontal GPC configuration)
For a manufacturer performing pyrolysis on crop waste, the process is as follows:
First, crop waste collected and fed into a thermal decomposition reactor, where it is then heated to very high temperatures in a chamber with little oxygen (to prevent combustion). This transforms the crop waste into a carbon-based material used as an agricultural fertilizer.

Actual Aerodyne horizontal GPC cyclone installation photo.
An Aerodyne GPC cyclone, configured horizontally, is located downstream of the pyrolysis chamber but upstream of the fan. In this position, the cyclone captures material while also allowing heat generated during the process to be reused. All of the equipment needed to carry out this process lives on a rig that can be attached to a tractor and driven through crop fields.
For this type of mobile processing equipment, the cyclone’s installation supports both dust collection and material recovery. It collects usable carbon material from the process within the height and space limitations of a mobile rig.
Feed delivery vehicle application (vertical KC configuration)
In another mobile cyclone application on feed delivery vehicles, a custom Aerodyne KC cyclone is installed vertically on the back of a tanker trailer.

This photo is NOT from the described Aerodyne installation, but a visual example similar to the described application.
Material is pneumatically transported into the tanker during filling. This airstream also travels through the cyclone to capture any material that doesn’t make it to the tanker, preventing material loss and keeping the surrounding equipment clean.
Because the cyclone is mounted directly on the tanker, it had to be designed around the vehicle and the process for reliable performance. The KC cyclone provides point-of-use dust collection and product reclamation without adding unnecessary complexity (i.e. repositioning during travel) to the mobile system.
Why cyclones work well in mobile industrial dust control applications
In both applications, cyclone dust collectors are key players in collecting particulate from the process in a compact, low-maintenance manner. They don’t need to be maneuvered around during transport, and they meet the height, weight, and space limits set by the mobile trailer or rig they’re attached to without negatively impacting collection efficiency.
Cyclones can also serve as pre-filters in mobile dust collection systems. When installed upstream of a baghouse, cartridge collector, or other final filtration equipment, a cyclone can remove a significant amount of particulate before it reaches the filters to reduce dust loading, extend filter life, and decrease the frequency of maintenance or replacements. For mobile systems operating in harsh or remote environments over long distances, that reduced maintenance burden can be especially important!
Horizontal cyclone dust collectors are a strong fit for applications where operators need:
- Compact dust collection
- A low-profile equipment layout
- Reduced filter loading
- Material recovery
- Fewer moving parts
- Lower maintenance requirements
- Quality performance in tough dust applications
- Compatibility with trailers, rigs, and other mobile platforms
Whether the application involves mining, asphalt, agriculture, pneumatic conveying, construction materials, or specialty processing, mobile dust control equipment should always balance performance with a careful, practical design.
