Spray Dryer Application: Improving Dust Collection with Cyclone Technology
A company that produces additives for livestock feed wanted to manufacture a key ingredient in-house instead of purchasing it from outside suppliers. To support this spray dryer application, the company installed a spray dryer that exhausted 26,000 ACFM of air. They needed an efficient industrial dust collection system capable of removing dust particles measuring approximately 16 microns and larger while maintaining reliable process performance. To meet these requirements, the company turned to Aerodyne Environmental for a proven spray dryer dust collection solution.

After evaluating the company’s spray dryer application, process conditions, and cooling requirements, Dan suggested using the Aerodyne SplitStream® Dust Collector to remove dust while simultaneously cooling the exhaust air. The SplitStream would use 17,500 ACFM of ambient air in the secondary air stream to cool the process airstream while removing 99% of dust particles 7 microns and larger. The secondary air design of the SplitStream minimizes dust buildup and improves dust collection efficiency by cooling the airflow while reducing the stickiness caused by the combination of dust and moist air, making it an ideal solution for the company’s application.
The Aerodyne SplitStream® Dust Collector achieves high dust collection efficiency by forcing dirty gases into a powerful centrifugal motion. This centrifugal action throws dust particulate out of the gas stream. A secondary air stream carries the dust particulate to the hopper, keeping dust away from the collector walls and reducing sticking and abrasion. As a result, the SplitStream virtually eliminates many dust collector maintenance problems common to other cyclone dust collectors. Preventing particulate from contacting the collector walls is a major factor in the unit’s ability to achieve high efficiency ratings. Since the SplitStream does not use bags or filter cartridges, the collected product can be easily returned to the process for reuse or sent out for disposal.
