Treacherous Insulation Application Shows Baghouses No Mercy

The Problem

Insulation can be a tricky material to handle, and its fibrous nature can wreak havoc on a dust collection system. One US insulation manufacturer experienced major issues with their application, part of which stemmed from their particular insulation having a metal backing that required high heat during processing. The baghouses being used to filter dust in the operation could not keep up with system conditions, which were deemed treacherous.

The Solution and Measurable Results

Realizing they were at a crossroads, the manufacturer set out to find way of preventing further damage to their existing dust collection system. Aerodyne’s GPC-36 dust collector proved to be the right solution for this difficult job and worked beautifully as a pre-filter for the existing baghouse collectors in the process. This way, the baghouses were only responsible for the final, less intense filtration. Because the GPC is able to operate both horizontally or vertically, the manufacturer had no trouble finding a model that would fit snugly in their current system.

The rugged construction of the GPC makes it durable against demanding particulate like insulation, whose fibrous dust posed no issues for the collector. Against the “treacherous” odds, it did not clog or create any reductions in airflow.

Post installation, the plant operators noticed a dramatic difference in their operation. Baghouses were less strained during operation, fibrous installation no longer caused clogging, and maintenance demands grew smaller. As a result, the manufacturers got the operation running smoothly and eventually boosted production times.

Contrary to the long, tapered body of a conventional cyclone, the GPC has a shorter, smaller body and ground plate. As a result, it can be configured horizontally or vertically and is ideal for facilities with limited overhead clearance or floor space.

GPC’s have a sloped spiral inlet that directs dirty gas streams toward a fixed ground plate and hopper. This ground plate forces vortex reversal to occur in a much shorter space, eliminating the need for a long, tapered body. When that dirty gas stream strikes the ground plate, fine particulate that hasn’t made it to the dust collector walls is then deflected into the hopper. The ground plate also shields collected particulate from re-entraining during vortex reversal. Subsequently, is acts as a barrier between the separation chamber and the collection hopper. This innovative design enables a compact dust collector like this to operate at high efficiency, even when installed horizontally.
