How a GPC Dust Collector Extends the Life of Abrasive Dust Collector Filters

A customer in Iowa was experiencing issues with its abrasive dust collector. The company uses a cartridge collector to handle abrasive ceramic dust generated during the manufacturing of ceramic parts. The main problem the company faced was that the cartridge filters were wearing out too quickly, costing both time and money. Hoping Aerodyne Environmental had a solution for this abrasive dust application, a plant operator contacted Dan Navicky for more information.
After reviewing the company’s operating specifications, Dan concluded that the facility would benefit from installing a GPC Dust Collector ahead of the cartridge collector. The Aerodyne GPC Dust Collector operates differently from conventional cyclone dust collectors. A sloped spiral inlet directs the dirty gas stream toward a fixed ground plate and hopper of the dust collector. The ground plate forces vortex reversal to occur in a much shorter space, eliminating the need for a long, tapered body.
As the dirty gas stream strikes the convex ground plate, fine particulate that has not completely reached the dust collector walls is deflected into the hopper. The ground plate also shields collected particulate from the forces of vortex reversal, acting as a barrier between the separation chamber and the collection hopper. This innovative design enables the compact GPC Dust Collector to operate at high dust collection efficiency, even when installed horizontally.
By placing the GPC Dust Collector in front of the cartridge collector, most of the abrasive dust is captured before reaching the cartridges. This helps improve abrasive dust collector performance, extends cartridge filter life, reduces dust collector maintenance, and improves the overall performance of the facility’s industrial dust collection system. The process saves the company both time and money by reducing the need to frequently purchase and replace cartridge filters.
