A large producer of breakfast foods found themselves experiencing complications in collecting dust particles from their oat mill production line. The dust collection system suffered from prolonged exposure to moisture and high temperatures because a significant amount of dust and steam was collected from the oat dryer during the kilning process. With the air moist and the temperatures regularly above 200°F, baghouse efficiency issues became unreasonable. Spatial constraints also required a horizontal installation. The manufacturer ultimately approached Aerodyne’s engineering team looking for a solution.

The Solution and Measurable Results

After a careful analysis of the situation, we recommended the manufacturer introduce a SplitStream Cyclone Dust Collector, whose unique design makes it ideal for removing particulate from hot and moist conditions. The counter-centrifugal forces serving as the conceptual basis for the SplitStream prevent dust and particulate from touching the walls of the collector, avoiding heat and moisture during collection. A lack of collection medium reduces issues with heat, creates greater efficiency, and reduces the collector’s maintenance requirements. In addition, these dust collectors can be engineered to be food grade, to prevent processing issues, or issues with the FDA. The cyclone’s unique ability to be installed horizontally was integral to the success of this installation.

The producer ultimately purchased two SplitStream collectors for both the large groats stream and the small groats stream. Heat and moisture no longer interfere with particulate collection, and the producer is newly able to prepare oat mill without delays at the fault of their dust collector.
